Scarborough General Hospital

The Scarborough Hospital is a hospital corporation based in Scarborough. Affiliated with University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, the hospital has two campuses (General and Birchmount), along with five community satellite sites. In 2009, the new Emergency and Critical Care Centre opened, doubling the size compared to the previous Emergency department. It featured a new infection control and isolation protocol, as well as five care zones that are designed for paediatric, Rapid Assessment, Critical Care, Acute Care and Ambulatory Care.

ESC Automation Toronto had to design and install the HVAC system in the new zones while maintaining the legacy systems in the hospital.

The existing network wiring and pneumatic controls for the remaining equipment in the tunnels were rerouted. In the new addition, a DSM-RTR was used to connect to the Ethernet BAS network in the hospital. Delta’s DNT-T221’s were used to control the local reheat coil valves in the patient areas.

ESC Automation Toronto was able to have the hospital on the V3 platform, which allowed the site to utilize Delta Controls’ building management software ORCAview software so that the Building Management System was manageable through one easy-to-use interface. Operator access to the BAS was improved, along with maintaining the legacy V2 hardware and improving the network architecture.

The new and existing building controls were enhanced and integrated, which

  •  coupled with the faster communication speeds and increased trending capabilities of the V3 product line
  •  allowed the hospital to pro-actively manage their facility with greater purpose and enable energy saving strategies.
