Archives Building

There are over one million photographs of Toronto within its collection, with 50,000+ available to view on its website. The present archives building was opened in 1992 incorporating climate controlled records, a central atrium exhibit area, and a 60-seat theater with a research hall.

ESC Automation Toronto had to retrofit air handling units, VAV’s, chillers, fan coils, radiators, along with completing the meter integration of hydro, water, and gas in just 60 days. The HVAC modifications needed to cater to the comfort level of the occupants along with maintaining strict temperature and humidity levels for the preservation of the priceless archived documents.

We managed mechanical, electrical, millwrights, and balancing subcontractors. The archives building was upgraded with a complete BACnet BAS enabled solution. Along with the integrated mechanical systems, a total of 34 Delta VAV BACnet controllers were used.

The retrofit installed by ESC Automation Toronto Inc. greatly improved the occupants comfort level. The system allowed the building to save on energy as well; generating 30% savings in electricity and 24% savings in natural gas.

The new installation improved climate control stability to preserve documents safely while increasing the utility savings of the building. With the Delta BAS installation, the HVAC in the City of Toronto Archives Building was centralized into one easy convenient to use interface.
